The company makes its clothing in Egypt in a socially responsible manner that benefits both the Egyptian workers making the clothing and the U.S. children that wear the toxin-free, allergen-free apparel. With fair-trade at the forefront, the community-based farm provides an ideal model for the production of organic clothes that has not reached U.S. soils just yet.

In 1998, Janice Masoud, president of Under the Nile, then a clothing designer, was looking for clothes that would not irritate her young children's sensitive skin, which was reacting to the chemicals found in conventional clothing. As the choices were virtually nil in the U.S., she became inspired to create something. She discovered organic Egyptian cotton at Sekem Initiative Farm in Egypt and immediately started working with them on a line for the U.S. market. This sparked the birth of Under the Nile.

All Under the Nile apparel is made with handpicked, Demeter certified organic Egyptian cotton, known as the softest and most durable cotton in the world. The cotton is grown and the apparel manufactured at Sekem Farm. From the cottonseed to the spinning and weaving of yarn to the sewing process, every step in the manufacturing process is completely toxin- and pesticide-free, ensuring a healthy environment, healthy workers, and in the end, kids who are wearing stylish, non-toxic, allergen free apparel.

"Sekem Farm provides a worldwide model community for biodynamic agriculture and fair trade and a workplace that is fully supportive of its workers, from educational programs with on-site schools to health care and on-site medical facilitates," explained Masoud. "The community is based on healthy living for both the workers and the environment and sets the standard for organic cotton growth and manufacturing. While organic cotton is available in the U.S., Sekem Farm's outlook particularly appealed to me, as I am interested in a holistic approach," she continued.
